Racism and Corporate Social Responsibility

Friday, April 27th, 2007

In 2007 I was in discussion with a government minister and a member of the conservative shadow cabinet (on  separate occasions!) on how ideas in my book Working Ethics – how to be fair in a culturally complex world might be used in their work.  I am currently thinking how the ideas may help combat racism and promote aspects of Corporate Social Responsibility.

Comparing the ethics of nursing and policing

Friday, April 13th, 2007

At a seminar on interprofessional issues at Kingston University on March 2007 I gave a paper comparing the ethical terrain of nursing and policing.  I began by claiming that the terrain of the police was more complex and difficult to deal with than that of nursing.  I then argued that, despite this difference, there were certain common core values which, if accepted and acknowledged by each profession, could  help each be more effective and also enhance cooperation between them.

If you’re interested in receiving a copy of the paper, please email me at the address given on the about this website page.

Discussion at Hay-on-Wye Literary Festival 2006

Thursday, April 12th, 2007

Polly Toynbee, Guardian journalist and broadcaster, Trevor Phillips, Chair of the then Commission for Racial Equality and I discussed values in professional and public life at the Hay on Wye Festival on 3rd June 2006. David Walker, Editor of Public, chaired the event.

Polly and Trevor were complimentary about Working Ethics and related it to their views on the work and role of professionals. The audience of 400 raised valuable issues, some expressing irritation at the way concerns about human rights affect their working practices and Trevor had some robust thoughts on this. Afterwards Polly and I signed copies of our books – Polly having the longer queue!

I am very grateful to Polly, Trevor and David for coming to Hay and for their participation. As it turned out, it was a beautiful day, so they were able to enjoy Hay at its magical best.

Conference and book on globalisation of nursing

Thursday, April 12th, 2007

A conference on the Globalisation of Nursing was held at the University of Surrey in July 2006.  It was organised by Nursing Ethics, the international journal for healthcare professionals, and ICNE (the International Centre for Nursing Ethics)  University of Surrey, Guildford, UK.

I gave a paper on the global basis for nursing ethics.  This has now appeared as a chapter in the anthology of the conference papers published by Radcliffe and called The Globalisation of Nursing: ethical, legal and political issues, edited by Verena Tschudin, August 2008.
