About this website
The site is managed by me, Richard Rowson. I am a lecturer in professional ethics and my latest book is Working Ethics – how to be fair in a culturally complex world, published by Jessica Kingsley Publishing, London and Philadelphia, February, 2006, ISBN 1 85302 750 2.
This book is the result of my work with organisations in education, social work, healthcare, and the police, developing ethics policies. I’ve also worked with professionals on a one-to-one basis, thinking through ethical issues that concern them. If you have read the book, I hope you enjoyed it and found it useful. If you have not read it, here is what it is about:
Working Ethics sets out an ethical framework for people who work in all sections of culturally complex societies. It suggests ways in which professionals and others in public life can make decisions that will treat people fairly, earn their trust and foster democratic ideals. It also discusses issues of blame, and gives a brief guide to claims about rights.
This website is a place for discussing these topics. You may want to consider how the ideas in the book could be related to your profession or public work. You may want to question its views, or suggest how they could be usefully developed. You may want to share your thoughts with others, or get access to ideas which others are currently working on. The site will respond to your interests. It could, for example, have sections dedicated to particular professions, or to particular issues that arise in several professions, so you could exchange views with members of your own or other professions and with people involved in similar public work. This site will give links to other relevant sites.
How to contact me:
If you have thoughts on what you would find useful, or want to follow up any of the suggestions above, or if you would like off-site discussions about relating ethical perspectives to your profession, contact me here: richardhrowson [at] aol [dot] com. (Sorry to write my email address in this way, but I don’t want lots of spam). Please remember to put the “h” between richard and rowson.
I will reply as quickly as possible. I regret I cannot discuss ethical aspects of specific situations beyond suggesting general ethical considerations for you to consider.
Thank you for your visit, and happy thinking.
